This year Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation (Miwatj Health) celebrates its 25th anniversary of providing holistic, comprehensive primary health care to the people of East Arnhem Land.

Miwatj Health’s 25 year celebrations on the 25th and 26th of May will acknowledge the vision of Yol?u, Warnindilyakwa and Nunggubuyu leaders from across the region in working together to create a successful and region-wide health service controlled by Aboriginal people.

Who we are

Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation is an innovative, leading best practice and unique remote health organisation in Australia if not the world.  Our underlying philosophy is underpinned by the fundamental right of Aboriginal people to control their own health services making us an employer of choice. Miwatj Health operate five health centers providing access to health promotion, eye care and public health services to over 10,000 people in the East Arnhemland region with our head office located in the Township of Nhulunbuy a service sub for the East Arnhemland region.  We provide a community controlled comprehensive health service to our clients and promote one of the largest and most extensive Tackling Indigenous Smoking programs in Australia.

East Arnhem is a growing training hub with multiple organisations in the region collaborating to form a centre of excellence for medical student, junior doctor, GP Registrar and GP continuous development education and learning.  GPs at Miwatj have multiple professional development opportunities and participate fully in the collegiate environment of the East Arnhem medical community. The Miwatj Health head office is based in the township of Nhulunbuy.  Nhulunbuy was established in the late 1960’s as a service centre for a bauxite mining company and its employees.  Today, Nhulunbuy is a thriving township of around 2500 people and is the main economic and service hub in the East Arnhemland region. Nhulunbuy offers all the modern conveniences you would expect in a thriving community; supermarket, furniture warehouse, post office, bank, police station, fire station, butcher, gym, specialist shops, newsagency, private health practice, public and private schools, boarding school, modern 30 bed hospital, restaurants, clubs and bars. Yes, it even has a night life!  Located on the coast of the Arafura Sea to the north and the Gulf of Carpentaria to the east is a great draw card for fishing and outdoor enthusiasts. In the township itself there are numerous sporting, hobby and recreational clubs and facilities including tennis courts, football ovals, a surf club, sailing club, fishing club, nine- hole golf course and netball courts.  The area is serviced by a weekly barge service and daily domestic air service.

As a General Practitioner your generous remuneration package range will be $300 K – $342 K and will include;

26/07/16, Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem Land, NT – Today Australia and the world woke up shocked to the evidence of abuse and torture of Aboriginal children in correctional facilities in the Northern Territory. We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of a Royal Commission and the NT Chief Minister’s expression of disgust at these findings, now it’s time to find solutions.

MALMALDHARRA HEALTH CENTRE, Milingimbi

On July 1st 2016 the Milingimbi Health Centre was transferred from the Top End Health Service to Community Control within Miwatj Health. It’s been a long journey that the community started many years ago and as the elders described, today is “Milingimbi’s day of independence”.

The board of Miwatj health would like to thank the community of Milingimbi, wänga watangu, ga Yothu-Yindi ga Märi-Gutharra, the Top End Health Service Board and staff, Miwatj health staff members and the Commonwealth Department of Health.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Excellence Awards for 2015

Miwatj Health has great pleasure in announcing that Sarah Bukulatjpi has won three of the awards given out at the Northern Territory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Excellence Awards at Parliament House on Friday 9 October 2015.

Sarah is an Aboriginal Health Practitioner and has worked at the Ngalkanbuy Health Clinic since 2004. She received awards for: Specialist Practitioner Category, the Legend Award and the Aboriginal Health Practitioner of the Year.

Ruben David, the Area Services Manager (Barra Ward) has said: “Congratulations to Sarah, we are all very proud of her tremendous efforts and the skills that she brings to her work in the Clinic.”

Aboriginal people in the top end were introduced to tobacco by Macassan traders, later by missionaries and then by tobacco industry promotions. Today, Aboriginal smoking rates are among the highest in the country. If this is to change, understanding the cultural and historical roots of smoking may be an important step in promoting action.

Director of Miwatj honoured in Australia Day awards

Aust Of The Year Tony WurramarrbaThe staff and Board of Miwatj were proud to hear that Tony Wurramarrba was made an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia awards. Tony received this for distinguished service to the indigenous community of the Groote Eylandt Archipelago through leadership and advocacy for improved services and infrastructure. Chairman John Morgan commented that “Tony is one of our most effective spokesmen. He has a track record of effective leadership of his people, and at Board meetings always speaks strongly for the right of Aboriginal people to good health and to control their own health services. The people of Yirrkala community have a strong record of standing up for their rights – from the Bark Petition protesting the takeover of their traditional lands by a mining company in the 1960s, to the High Court case which granted Aboriginal people rights to sea country in 2008.

And now they have taken another big step forward, as management of their health care changes from the NT Government to a community-controlled organisation, Miwatj Health.

Resident of Yirrkala and member of the Board of Miwatj (and signatory to the original Bark Petition), Wali Wunungmurra, expressed his delight at the change. ‘We’ve been talking about, and requesting this, for many years’, he said. ‘It’s been too much talk and not enough action, but at last we’re there.’

Miwatj Health is working with the staff at Yirrkala health centre in a ‘systems approach’ to health care. ‘We have to balance the need to provide acute care with the need to implement a longer-term preventive approach’, said Dr Angela Woltmann, the Medical Director at Miwatj. ‘But we’re optimistic about the way we’re going, and look forward to getting to really know this community and its needs.’

Strongyloides Story

strongyloides flip chartStrongyloidiasis is caused by a worm living inside the body called Strongyloides stercoralis.
Other worms can make us sick, but Strongyloides can kill us.
Dr Wendy Page has received Ethics approval for her Research project on Strongyloides: Towards a National Strongyloidiasis Control Programme. Wendy has been a passionate advocate for better understanding and management of this condition which is very prevalent in East Arnhem. As part of this research a flip chart has been developed that is available to download here
