Strong Fathers, Strong Families Program

cookingThis three-year project aims to strengthen the role of Yolngu fathers in their families. Trained and supported Community Workers build capacity and provide support for young Yolngu men to be healthy role models and active participants in the lives of their children and families. It operates at several levels:

  • Weekly cooking and nutrition classes regularly attract between 15 and 25 enthusiastic young fathers, where they learn to prepare nutritious and tasty meals for their families and engage on issues of concern in their homes.
  • The Family Gardening Program complements the cooking classes, to help families understand how to achieve a healthy lifestyle without being dependent on supermarkets.
  • The Walngawu Djakamirri Surf Life Saving Club encourages fathers to take a lead role in events which attract around 100 children and parents every Sunday.

strong FathersProgram staff have also developed a close working relationship with the Families as First Teachers program at Yirrkala School, enabling the sharing of information to support family needs and facilitating referrals to health and support services. Weekly joint activities including family bush trips and playgroups attract between 18 and 30 families every week and provide an important opportunity to engage young fathers in their children’s health, development and wellbeing.
