Mobile clinic service

Miwatj Health provides clinical services by doctors, nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners and allied health staff, assisted by Community Workers, at our fixed clinics in Gunyangara (also known as Marngarr), Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala, Galiwiwin’ku (Elcho Island) and Yurrwi, and through mobile outreach services to nearby communities.

This comprises a wide range of professional services including diagnosis of illness; treating acute trauma; carrying out full adult and child health checks; ante-natal and post-natal care; providing medications; developing chronic disease care plans; undertaking mental health interventions; carrying out alcohol and other drug clinical assessments; transporting patients for further radiological investigations, and the full range of healthcare services.

All clinical services are provided following guidelines set out in the CARPA (Central Australian Rural Practitioners Association) Standard Treatment Manual.

In providing clinical services in the context of limited resources, Miwatj balances the need to provide acute care for short-term medical problems with the need to address the prevention and management of long-term chronic illness and child and maternal health problems. It is these long-term issues which are now the biggest threat to the overall health of our population, and our Chronic Conditions Prevention and Management Policy recognizes this – download  the full policy document here. Miwatj now receives funds specifically earmarked to address child and maternal health issues and tackle chronic health conditions, and we do this using a life-course approach.

Quality Service Provision:miwatj_records

  • All the clinic services provided by Miwatj Health, at Galiwin’ku, Yurrwi and on the Gove Peninsula, take part in quality improvement processes which measure our compliance with accepted clinical best practice. Our health services at Gove and Galiwin’ku participated in the One 21Seventy project, which involved rigorous clinical audits and the use of a health systems assessment tool.   • An important way we measure the quality of our service provision is through standardized Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). All Aboriginal health services in the NT, including Miwatj Health, report on these statistical indicators every six months. Brief definitions of these can be found here.
  • Miwatj bases its services on an objective understanding of the prevalence of illness, and on evidence of what works. To help with this, Miwatj maintains a computerized patient database, running Communicare software. This Clinical Information System (CIS) provides accurate information about individual clients to facilitate management of illness, allows us to identify key health problems and vulnerable groups in the population, helps us assess the impact our services are having on the population, and facilitates our reporting to governments and other bodies.
  • Miwatj’s clinics at Galiwin’ku, Gunyangara, Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala have all been assessed and meet accreditation requirements of Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL). Malmaldharra Clinic at Yurrwi is working towards meeting AGPAL accreditation standards.
